What Is IIT?
The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are renowned and prestigious institutes of higher education, located in India. They are governed by the IIT Act, 1961 which has declared them as educational institutions of national importance and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance. The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists 32 institutes (after the last amendment in 2016). Each IIT is autonomous, linked to the others through a common council (IIT Council), which oversees their administration. The Minister of Human Resource Development is the ex officio Chairperson of the IIT Council. As of 2018, the total number of seats for undergraduate programs in all IIT is 11,279.
The IITs have a common admission process for undergraduate admissions, the Joint Entrance Examination - Advanced (JEE Advanced), formerly IIT-JEE. IITs admit students based on their ranks in the exam. The postgraduate program that awards M.Tech. and MS and the doctoral programs that offer a Ph.D. in engineering is administered by the former IITs. M.Tech. and M.Sc. applications are accepted on the basis of GATE. Additionally, IITs also award other graduate degrees such as M.Sc in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, MBA, etc. IIT Guwahati Bombay also offers undergraduate design programs. Applicants to these programs are accepted through Common Admission Test (CAT), Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. (JAM) and Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED). Joint Seat Allocation Authority conducts the joint admission process for all of 23 IITs, which offered 10,962 undergraduate admissions for in 2017.
